Foundations

School ages · 12–18

Take the PCB stream. Biology and Geography are the most useful subjects. Fieldwork aptitude and physical readiness matter alongside academics — hiking, birding, naturalist clubs all count as preparation.

Note — This pathway weighs aptitude for working with people and ambiguity alongside science aptitude. For pure lab-research roles see Lab Ecology.

Undergraduate degree

Ages 18–22

A BSc in Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, or Ecology. This pathway is interdisciplinary by design — expect biology, social science, GIS, policy, and field methods in the same degree.

Specialise during & after your degree

Final 1–2 years of UG · Masters

Specialisation usually comes through where you intern, the MSc you pick (Conservation Practice, Wildlife Sciences, Sustainability), and your first NGO or government project. MSc is more important here than in most pathways.

Community Conservation Specialist

Co-designs with local communities living alongside wildlife and ecosystems.

Environmental Policy Specialist

Translates science into policy. Drafts regulations, advises government, works with international bodies.

Restoration Ecologist

Rebuilds degraded landscapes — mangroves, wetlands, grasslands, coral reefs. Action-oriented, long horizon.

NGO Programme Lead

Runs conservation projects on the ground. Mix of fieldwork, fundraising, team leadership, reporting to funders.

Human–Wildlife Conflict Specialist

Manages situations where wildlife and people clash. Blends biology, behavioural science, mediation.

Conservation Educator

Builds public understanding through schools, museums, media, and nature centres.

Citizen Science Coordinator

Designs and runs programmes where the public contributes data — from bird counts to water quality.
