Applied Design

About this pathway

Five distinct design disciplines under one roof — Visual, Digital & Interactive, Space, Experience, Fashion & Textiles. Studio-based work, portfolio-driven careers. Design schools test aptitude, not academics — so any stream can get you in.

1

Foundations

School ages · 12–18

Any stream works — Science, Commerce, or Arts. No specific subjects are required. Design schools test aptitude, not academics. Build a portfolio, observe everything, do art classes if you can.

2

Undergraduate degree

Ages 18–22

A Bachelor of Design (B.Des) at a design school. 4 years, studio-based, portfolio-driven.

  • a
Design aptitude tests — NID DAT, UCEED in India. Or portfolio-based admissions elsewhere.
  • b
Non-UG routes — Diploma, Foundation Courses, or a self-built portfolio. Workable but higher variance.
Note — Fashion schools typically run their own entrance exams.
3

Specialise during your degree

Final 1–2 years of UG

Many B.Des programs declare specialisation from year 2 and allow flexibility in creating your own course of study. Pick a discipline track, build a portfolio in that branch, do internships at studios or in-house design teams.
